How to Craft the Perfect ChatGPT Sequence Prompts: A Cheatsheet

A sequence prompt is a series of instructions you give an AI chatbot like ChatGPT to produce a better result. Rather than giving it a single set of instructions, you can chain together a series of prompts that build off each other, resulting in improved output.

For example, you can start by feeding the AI chatbot information on your desired persona and goals. Then, provide any necessary context, relevant examples, and specific instructions. Finally, test, iterate, and refine it for the best results.

Below are the 8 steps to creating a valuable and repeatable sequence prompt for any situation. This can include anything from drafting a sales email to creating a marketing plan. At the end, we also include a video breakdown with examples:

1. Train ChatGPT on Your Persona

The first thing you want to do is train ChatGPT on your desired persona. This can be you, your brand, or an expert you are needing help from.

Make sure you include the following:

• Background information on the persona

• Style and tone

This persona can either be the first prompt in your sequence, or, you can take advantage of ChatGPT’s new custom instructions for paid users, which allows you to set a repeatable persona with a specific style and tone.

However, this is most beneficial if you always use ChatGPT as a specific persona. If you switch between personas, it may be best to include this as the first part of your sequence prompt. The video below shows you how to do that.

2. Outline Your Prompt Goals

Next, let ChatGPT know what you’re trying to achieve with this specific prompt or sequence of prompts. Be specific. For example:

• I want you to write a sales email that gets people to open it with engaging subject lines and take the desired call to action with captivating email copy

• I want you to write detailed Midjourney prompts for images that I can use on my business landing pages that will increase conversion rates

End the prompt with: Respond “...” if you understand and I’ll give you the next set of instructions.

3. Give Necessary Context

Now, provide ChatGPT with any necessary information that’ll help it provide the best responses to your prompt. For example:

• The desired audience you’re writing your sales email for

• The product or service you’re selling or your desired call to action

• Information on what Midjourney is and how it works

End the prompt with: Respond “...” if you understand and I’ll give you the next set of instructions.

4. Provide Relevant Examples

Now that ChatGPT understands your goals and context, the next step is to provide relevant examples that will help ChatGPT come up with the best responses possible. For example:

• Past sales emails that performed well for your intended audience

• Midjourney prompts that have created the style of images you want

End the prompt with: Respond “...” if you understand and I’ll give you the next set of instructions.

5. Give Detailed Instructions

ChatGPT is now primed and ready for your full instructions, including constraints like word count limits. For longer instructions, it’s best to break up the prompt into sections labeled “section 1”, “section 2”, etc.

This will ensure ChatGPT doesn’t miss anything. It’s also helpful if you need the AI to rewrite a specific part of the response since you can simply reference that section with a follow-up request for revisions.

End the prompt with: Begin writing the first section if you understand.

6. Ask ChatGPT to Improve its Output

When you’re first testing your prompt, it’s likely that ChatGPT won’t get it 100% right on the first go-around. Don’t get discouraged!

In the areas where it didn’t follow instructions or specific parts you’d like to improve, simply explain to ChatGPT what you want improved and then ask it for suggestions on how to revise your prompt to achieve your result.

7. Test Across Different Scenarios

Once you’ve improved your prompt, it can be beneficial to test it across a variety of scenarios to ensure it performs consistently. This could involve changing the context, goals, or examples. For example:

• If you’re writing a sales email for a specific product or call-to-action, try the same prompt using a different product or call-to-action. Or, see if you can use the same prompt to craft a marketing email instead.

• Similarly, if you’re trying to create effective Midjourney prompts, update the sequence prompt with information on Dall-e or Stable Diffusion and see if it produces the same or better results.

8. Iterate & Refine Your Prompt

As you continue to experiment with your prompt, tweak the prompt verbiage based on the outputs you’re getting to improve the overall results.
